Analyst V – Manager, CHR [Note: Two (2) positions available]

Location: University of California, San Francisco – Laurel Heights

The Committee on Human Research (CHR) Manager (Analyst V – Supervisor) supports the UCSF mission to advance science and healthcare by overseeing a team of CHR analysts who are responsible for reviewing and approving human research applications. The review process includes setting agendas, conducting meetings at which the studies are discussed, writing letters that convey the outcome of the CHR Committee deliberations, reviewing researchers’ responses to these letters, and maintaining minutes of the Committee meetings. Specific responsibilities include the following:

 

  • Manage the activities of the three or more staff members within this review unit
  • Recruit, hire and train staff and evaluate their performance
  • Review and approve certain types of CHR applications
  • Attend CHR Committee meetings on an as-needed basis and contribute to Committee deliberations
  • Prepare correspondence and reports as needed
  • Work with CHR leadership to develop policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Provide guidance and training for CHR staff and for the research community
  • Work closely with faculty researchers and key research support units at UCSF including the Regulatory Knowledge and Support Program of the UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Center for AIDS Prevention, and Global Health Sciences.

Analyst IV – Coordinator, CHR
University of California, Department of Human Research Protection Program
Location: University of California, San Francisco – Laurel Heights

The Coordinator, Committee on Human Research (CHR), will improve patients’ access to research studies by working closely with physicians, scientists and study coordinators from UCSF and with staff from the CHR to facilitate the review and approval of human research applications.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Coordinate and manage a bi-monthly review board comprised of UCSF faculty and members from the community
  • Advise faculty and staff on how their projects, programs and applications can best comply with ethical, regulatory and procedural requirements for the conduct of human research
  • Train research staff in the preparation of applications, consent forms and recruitment materials, and be available for ongoing consultation
  • Screen and edit materials submitted to the CHR and provide extensive feedback to research team members
  • Participate in deliberations during CHR meetings and provide committee chairs, vice-chairs, and members with information about these research studies
  • Draft correspondence to research team summarizing results of the review and assist the research team in responding to comments

The average percent of time devoted to specific duties may change from time to time depending on HRPP needs.

Analyst II – IRB Assistant Coordinator
University of California, Department of Human Research Protection Program
Location: University of California, San Francisco – Laurel Heights

Under the supervision of the Assistant Coordinator Manager, the IRB Assistant Coordinator is responsible for analyzing and processing submissions for the continuing review or modification of CHR-approved research. Individual will evaluate changes to approved research to ensure compliance with applicable federal regulations, state laws, and university policies and procedures. Individual must ensure that submissions meet basic standards for review so that the IRB, Chair, and/or designated reviewer are able to efficiently complete their regulatory and ethical reviews. The IRB Assistant Coordinator must ensure submissions receive an appropriate level of review (e.g., full board, expedited, exempt), and ensure IRB reviewers with appropriate expertise are assigned to the submission. If any part of the application is incomplete or non-compliant, it is the responsibility for the IRB Assistant Coordinator to take corrective action by communicating in writing, by phone and/or in person with the faculty investigator or his or her support staff. Prior to formal review, the IRB Assistant Coordinator must be able to perform these tasks independently and with good judgment. After formal review, the IRB Assistant Coordinator generally performs this task at the direction of the IRB, Chair or expedited reviewer. The individual is responsible for processing and facilitating all stages of the review, from initial submission to final approval. He/she must have a strong customer service orientation, proven problem solving abilities, demonstrated oral and written communication skills in order to effectively assist and advise faculty or research administrators.
