Certain New IRB Submissions No Longer Accepted in iRIS

No Longer Accepted: New Studies Requiring Full Committee Review

  • As part of the transition from the current IRB iRIS system to Research Gateway IRB, the IRB is no longer able to accept submissions of new studies requiring Full Committee Review in iRIS, effective immediately. These submissions are unlikely to complete IRB processing before the system cutover and would need to be resubmitted in Research Gateway IRB on or after July 1, 2026. Hence, placing this hold on these submissions will help study teams avoid unnecessary duplicate work.
  • Training and materials will be available in June to get you ready for a July 1st submission in Research Gateway IRB.

Discouraged: New Studies Requesting Reliance on Non-UCSF IRBs

  • In addition, we strongly discourage submitting any new studies in iRIS that rely on an external IRB other than WCG, Advarra, Jaeb, NCI CIRB, or Fresno Community Health System (formerly Community Medical Centers in Fresno).
  • Studies relying on WCG, Advarra, Jaeb, NCI CIRB, or Fresno Community Health System may continue to submit to the IRB until the submission freeze date.

What About Other Types of Submissions?

  • Guidance on all other submission types has not changed. Please see our instructions for Upcoming Submissions for details.
